Declaration of generative AI in Scientific Writing

Computers in Earth Science Letters (CESL) recognizes the increasing use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in scientific writing. To ensure transparency, reproducibility, and integrity, authors are required to declare any use of AI tools in the writing process upon submission of a manuscript. This policy applies only to the writing process, and does not apply to the use of AI tools for data analysis or drawing research insights.

Guidelines for Authors

  • Permitted Use: Generative AI tools may only be used to improve readability, clarity, and language of the manuscript.

  • Human Oversight: AI-generated content must be carefully reviewed and edited by the authors, as AI may produce output that is incorrect, incomplete, or biased. Authors are fully responsible and accountable for all content.

  • Authorship Restrictions: AI tools cannot be listed or cited as authors since authorship implies responsibilities that only humans can perform.

  • Declaration Requirement: Authors must declare AI use in a separate section at the end of the manuscript before the references. The statement should specify the tool, purpose, and confirm that authors reviewed and edited the content.

Example Statement:
Title of new section: Declaration of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process.
Statement: During the preparation of this work, the author(s) used [NAME TOOL / SERVICE] in order to [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for the content of the published article.

  • Exclusions: Basic tools such as grammar, spelling, and reference checkers do not require declaration.

  • Reviewer/Editor Policy: To protect authors’ rights and confidentiality, generative AI tools are not permitted for use by reviewers or editors during peer review or manuscript evaluation. CESL is actively evaluating compliant AI tools and may revise this policy in the future.
