GenAI Policies

Computers in Earth Science Letters (CESL) acknowledges the evolving role of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and AI-assisted technologies in scientific research and writing. To maintain transparency, reproducibility, and the integrity of the scholarly record, CESL has established the following policies regarding the use of GenAI tools in the preparation and review of manuscripts.

1. Use of GenAI in Manuscript Writing

  • Authors may use GenAI tools only to assist with writing, improving clarity, readability, grammar, or style.

  • AI-generated content must be reviewed, verified, and edited by the authors, who remain fully responsible for all intellectual content.

  • GenAI tools cannot be listed as authors or credited with authorship.

  • Authors must declare any use of GenAI in a dedicated section at the end of the manuscript, before references.
    Example Declaration:
During the preparation of this work, the author(s) used [NAME TOOL / SERVICE] to [REASON]. The author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take full responsibility for the published article.

  • Use of basic tools (e.g., spell checkers, reference managers) does not require declaration.

2. Use of GenAI for Data Analysis

  • The policy on manuscript writing does not restrict the use of AI for research purposes, including data analysis, modeling, simulations, or generating insights.

  • Authors must clearly describe AI-assisted analyses in the Methods section and provide sufficient information for reproducibility.

3. Use of GenAI by Reviewers and Editors

  • To protect authors’ confidentiality and the integrity of peer review, reviewers and editors are prohibited from using GenAI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) during the evaluation of manuscripts.

  • CESL will monitor developments in compliant AI tools and may update this policy in the future.

4. Ethical Responsibility and Accountability

  • Authors are fully accountable for all content, figures, data, and interpretations, regardless of AI assistance.

  • Any misuse of GenAI, including undisclosed generation of text, data fabrication, or plagiarism, is considered a violation of publication ethics and may result in corrections, retraction, or other editorial actions in accordance with COPE guidelines.

5. Transparency and Compliance

  • Clear declaration of GenAI usage ensures transparency for readers, reviewers, and the scientific community.

  • CESL encourages responsible, ethical, and transparent use of AI tools to support reproducibility, clarity, and scientific integrity.
