Declaration of generative AI in Scientific Writing

The Journal of Geothermal Research and Volcanology (JoGRaV) recognizes the increasing use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in academic writing. To maintain transparency, accountability, and scientific integrity, JoGRaV requires authors to clearly disclose any use of generative AI tools in the preparation of their manuscripts.

Acceptable Use of Generative AI

Authors may use generative AI tools (such as language models or AI-assisted editing software) for limited purposes, including:

  • Improving grammar, spelling, and language clarity

  • Enhancing readability and structure

  • Formatting assistance

  • Generating outlines under author supervision

However, AI tools must not be used to:

  • Generate scientific data, results, or interpretations without verification

  • Replace critical analysis or scholarly judgment

  • Create fabricated citations, references, or data

  • Generate images, figures, or datasets without proper disclosure and validation

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of all submitted content, including any material produced with AI assistance.

Mandatory Disclosure

If generative AI tools were used in manuscript preparation, authors must include a statement in a separate section titled “Declaration of Generative AI Use” before the References section.

Example statement:

“The authors used [name of AI tool] to assist with language editing and manuscript organization. All scientific content, data interpretation, and conclusions were independently developed and verified by the authors.”

If no AI tools were used, no statement is required.

Authorship and Accountability

Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors. Authorship is limited to individuals who meet established authorship criteria and who can take full responsibility for the content of the manuscript.

Authors are accountable for ensuring that AI-assisted text does not contain plagiarism, fabricated information, or biased content. The use of AI does not exempt authors from compliance with the journal’s plagiarism screening, ethical standards, and publication policies.

Editorial Oversight

The editorial office reserves the right to request clarification regarding the use of AI tools during manuscript evaluation. Failure to disclose AI usage when applicable may result in rejection, correction, or retraction in accordance with JoGRaV’s publication ethics policies.

Through this policy, JoGRaV promotes responsible and transparent use of generative AI while safeguarding scientific integrity and trust in geothermal and volcanology research.
