GenAI Policies

The Journal of Geothermal Research and Volcanology (JoGRaV) recognizes the growing role of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools in research and scholarly communication. To maintain transparency, integrity, and accountability, the journal has established the following policies regarding the use of GenAI in manuscript preparation and submission.

Acceptable Use of GenAI

Authors may use GenAI tools for:

  • Language editing and grammar improvement (e.g., clarity, readability, academic tone).

  • Formatting assistance (e.g., headings, reference formatting, manuscript structure).

  • Idea structuring (e.g., outlining sections, summarizing background literature under author supervision).

GenAI use is permitted only as a supportive tool. Authors must ensure that the final manuscript reflects their own scholarly judgment and scientific responsibility.

Prohibited Use of GenAI

GenAI tools must not be used for:

  • Generating fabricated or manipulated data, results, or interpretations.

  • Creating fake citations, references, or bibliographic entries.

  • Producing figures, tables, images, or graphical outputs that misrepresent scientific findings.

  • Replacing essential intellectual contributions, such as hypothesis formulation, research design, data analysis, or scientific interpretation.

  • Writing entire manuscripts without meaningful author contribution and verification.

Disclosure Requirement

Authors must explicitly disclose any use of GenAI tools in the manuscript. The disclosure should be included in a dedicated statement section (recommended title: “Declaration of Generative AI Use”) or placed in the Acknowledgments section.

The disclosure must clearly state:

  • The name of the tool used (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot, Grammarly).

  • The purpose of use (e.g., language editing, formatting, outlining).

Example statement:

“The authors used [tool name] to assist with language editing and improving manuscript readability. All scientific content, analysis, and conclusions were developed and verified by the authors.”

Authorship and Responsibility

  • GenAI tools cannot be listed as authors.

  • Human authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the manuscript.

  • Any errors, bias, ethical violations, or scientific inaccuracies arising from GenAI use remain the responsibility of the authors.

Editorial and Peer Review Oversight

  • Manuscripts may be screened for inappropriate or undisclosed GenAI use.

  • Editors and reviewers may request clarification if GenAI involvement is suspected but not declared.

  • Undisclosed or unethical use of GenAI may result in rejection, correction, or retraction of the article, in accordance with JoGRaV’s publication ethics policies and COPE guidelines.

Through these GenAI policies, JoGRaV supports responsible innovation in scientific communication while protecting research integrity and maintaining trust in geothermal and volcanology scholarship.
