Screening for Plagiarism

The Journal of Geothermal Research and Volcanology (JoGRaV) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity and originality. To ensure that all published content meets ethical publishing standards, every submitted manuscript undergoes plagiarism screening prior to peer review.

Plagiarism Detection Process

All manuscripts submitted to JoGRaV will be screened using the Turnitin similarity detection tool (or an equivalent plagiarism detection system). The similarity report is evaluated by the editorial team to identify potential cases of:

  • Direct plagiarism

  • Self-plagiarism or redundant publication

  • Improper citation or paraphrasing

  • Unattributed use of figures, tables, or data

  • Excessive similarity with previously published work

The similarity index is assessed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Editors review the context of overlapping text to distinguish acceptable similarity (e.g., references, standard terminology, or commonly used methodological descriptions) from unethical copying.

Similarity Index Threshold

JoGRaV applies a strict plagiarism policy. The journal will immediately reject any manuscript that indicates plagiarism or self-plagiarism with a similarity index exceeding 20% based on the Turnitin similarity report.

Manuscripts with similarity below this threshold may still be returned to authors for revision if overlap is considered inappropriate (for example, excessive copied text even if the total percentage is low).

Actions in Cases of Plagiarism

If plagiarism is detected before publication, the manuscript will be rejected. Depending on the severity of the case, the journal may also restrict future submissions from the authors for a certain period.

If plagiarism is discovered after publication, JoGRaV will follow COPE guidelines, which may include issuing a correction, an expression of concern, or retracting the article to maintain the integrity of the scientific record.

Author Responsibility

Authors are responsible for ensuring that all submitted manuscripts are original and properly cite all sources. Any reused content, including text, figures, or tables, must be clearly attributed and referenced.

Through this plagiarism screening policy, JoGRaV aims to uphold ethical research standards, protect the originality of scholarly work, and maintain trust in scientific publishing within geothermal and volcanic research communities.
